Being an Assistant Family-Teacher (AFT) is incredibly fulfilling, and the rewards extend far beyond simple job satisfaction. Each day, I have the privilege of being a part of transformative journeys—watching children not only heal, but truly thrive. It’s the small victories that speak volumes, like a shy child beginning to share their thoughts and feelings or a previously withdrawn teen reaching out to form a relationship. These moments reinforce my belief in the power of compassion and support, reminding me that I’m not just helping them cope; I'm empowering them to embrace their potential and confidently face their futures. The impact of these experiences leaves an indelible mark on my heart and fuels my passion for what I do.

AFTs have the important role of teaching youth the life skills they need to succeed in life, while also guiding them through their milestones, challenges and the complexities of life. Each child has a unique story filled with opportunities for growth and healing.

One story stands out as a powerful reminder of resilience. A few years ago, a young girl came to live at the Family Home where I was working, her eyes reflecting uncertainty. Having faced the foster care system and a difficult family situation, she needed support in various areas of her life. Her struggles with reading were significant. At 8th grade, she was reading at a 4th-grade level and showed little interest beyond social media and music lyrics. However, through teaching, building relationships, dedication and teamwork, I watched her flourish. She not only caught up to her grade level in reading, but also developed a love for books, turning reading into a hobby. This journey of growth and empowerment continually reminds me of the impact AFTs can have in a child's life.

In that pivotal moment, I realized the profound impact of our work at Boys Town. It is not just about teaching; it is about transforming lives. For the young girl we cared for and supported, this was more than a step forward in reading comprehension, it was an opening to a world of possibilities she never thought were available to her.  Working together, we were empowering her to embrace her future with confidence, proving that with the right tools and support, she could soar beyond her circumstances.

Becoming an AFT is more than a job. It’s a calling to serve and a commitment to nurturing and guiding the next generation, fostering a sense of belonging and support for children and families alike.
