So the children were placed in three different homes. When that happened, she attempted suicide. I just didn’t see the point of living, or, I mean, without my kids, life was just pointless.

When I was younger, I think I was like five or six. My parents, my real parents, they were both really into drugs. They would be gone for days. I went to sleep on the train, the subways in New York, and I would just take the train all the way to the last stop and then all the way back. I would still go to school, and I would be so tired at the end of each day because I would only get about five hours of sleep.

What we focus on at Boys Town is saving children and healing families. The Boys Town Residential program is for troubled kids. When they come here, our campus is a safe place. It’s a caring place. They learn social skills, get caught up in school, and either finish their program and return home or graduate from our high school. It’s just a great place for kids. It’s so diverse here—you see people from Michigan, California, Georgia, Florida, all going through the same thing. You’re not alone.

You create memories for our kids, and those memories create possibilities. Sometimes our kids can see possibilities in their lives. They don’t know they can be doing something different than selling drugs, or they don’t know the difference to live. It makes it real for them.

We help families through in-Home Family Services. We teach parents how to parent their children, give consequences, and be able to teach themselves. Because if we were just to teach the child, as soon as we remove ourselves, nothing’s going to change. We need that environment to change, and we need the parent to take the role they should have as a parent.

The Boys Town National Hotline is a 24/7 resource referral and crisis line for kids and parents across the country. Trained counselors handle calls and web-based contacts, helping parents and teens through difficult times. On average, we handle over a hundred thousand calls each year and over 20,000 web-based contacts.

Boys Town also brings a behavioral management system to many schools, reducing office referrals and helping kids stay in the classroom so they can learn effectively.
