At Boys Town, chess is about much more than just the game itself. It gives youth a hands-on way to build important cognitive, social and emotional skills that help them succeed both in school and in everyday life.

The Boys Town Chess Club serves middle and high school students living on campus, many of whom have faced significant challenges. Through chess, students practice critical thinking, focus and decision-making while learning how to weigh options, solve problems and stay calm under pressure.

Practices are designed to mirror real tournament play. Students use chess clocks, record their moves and follow the etiquette of competition. In many ways, the chessboard becomes a safe space where they can practice real-life skills in a supportive environment.

What happens after each match is just as important. Students reflect on their decisions and learn how to handle both wins and losses with resilience. Along the way, they build accountability, manage frustration and develop a growth mindset—skills that extend far beyond the board.

The club also creates a strong sense of connection. Students compete together, encourage one another and build relationships across age groups. For many, Chess Club becomes a place where they truly feel they belong. Even Charlotte, a medical support dog, helps create a calm and comforting environment where students can stay focused and confident.

In 2026, the program reached an exciting milestone by hosting and competing in its first United States Chess Federation-rated scholastic tournament. For many students, it was their first experience in a formal competitive setting and a chance to build confidence, perseverance and emotional regulation in a meaningful way.

At Boys Town, programs like Chess Club are designed to support the whole child. With the right guidance and encouragement, chess becomes more than a game—it becomes a pathway to lifelong skills.
