College World Series. A booth at 12th and Fahey at Ballpark Village outside the stadium will feature life sized pictures of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Father Flanagan for selfies. You can see historic baseball memorabilia and win prizes. Meanwhile at the Boys Town Hall of History a historical display will go more in depth to the history of Boys Town with signed memorabilia and pictures from some of the greats like Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Ozzie Smith, and former CWS teams.
Over 100 years ago Father Edward Flanagan organized baseball games to connect to the homeless boys in the city of Omaha. From these baseball games Father Flanagan began to develop his concept to aid the homeless boys in the city. One of the first sports at Boys Town was baseball, and the integrated team was one of the first in the Omaha area. The Boys Town baseball team could not afford new equipment so the 1930’s movie comedy team Abbott and Costello purchased all new equipment and uniforms for the boys. One of the most famous Boys Town baseball games took place in the 1949 when the team played the New York Orphan All Stars at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Thousands of people attended the game which unfortunately Boys Town lost. Over the decades many famous baseball players visited Boys Town, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and Ted Williams to name a few.
Boys Town, along with more than 50 other vendors, have put in the work into creating an amazing fan experience with interactive booths and tons of giveaways. There will be no shortage of fun for fans of all ages. Stop by the Boys Town booth to learn more about what we have to offer, take selfies with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Father Flanagan, check out our historic baseball memorabilia, and win prizes.
